On November 20, 2005 ever cozy and friendly restaurant Chez Paniesse (named “Best Restaurant in America” by Gourmet Magazine in 2001) located in Gourmet Ghetto of Berkeley , CA, USA, transformed into the welcoming place for informal meeting of new and old friends, for sharing the excitement of tasting ever delicious and nutritious food (the restaurant is world-renowned for using all-organic ingredients as well as for serving meals to Royalties and other celebrities, visiting the Bay Area). On this warm and sunny afternoon, famed Chez Paniesse, lit up by the soothing rays of gently November sun, turned into a place for gathering for those who wanted to celebrate life-long commitment to living kindness of the colleague-chef, of someone who was behind the scenes for multitude of dinner and birthday parties and celebrations, who dedicated the life to serve the local community of all walks, including those who desperately needed help. The announcement poster had quite inspiring quotes for those who did not know personally the Guest of Honor, the Bay Area Chef Phil Sheremeta. Simple yet elegant Fundraiser’s poster had a message that resonated immediately “…you might not know it, but you’ve probably eaten his food”, listing such favorite eateries like Chez Paniesse, Fonda, Bette’ Oceanview Dinner, June Taylor Jams, where Phil Sheremeta worked and delighted visitors with his tasty creations. It was also a call for help and support in the difficult time of battling cancer.

Ms. Alice Waters, the owner of the restaurant and the Founder of Chez Paniesse Foundation, honored everyone with her personal involvement into cooking as well as with her warm and charismatic personality. The staff of the restaurant (incl. Phil’s personal friends Clare Bell Fullers and Richard Seibert) also put their heart and soul into organizing Silent Auction that offered generously donated gifts from multiple gourmet restaurants, businesses, fine craftsmen and local artists – just too many to list them all. Ms. Gutman was delighted to be able to contribute her signed CD’s to the auction as well as to present copies of her personalized CD’s “Healing Resonance©” and “Yearning for Peace” personally to Phil Sheremeta. Ms. Gutman shared her heightened admiration for those who choose the demanding profession of chef that she had a chance to affirm through her recent personal experience of having to cook for the event for 50 people in order to avoid the event’s cancellation (to read details about “New Year’s Arts and Music Salon”, please, go to page “Taking Fun Seriously”). She spoke with many about how much our busy lives lack of nurturing food and nurturing art.
It was a very memorable and satisfying afternoon of warmth, kindness, most delicious food and of course, the celebration of Phil’s life-long dedication to compassion and giving.
